Railing Price Estimator for San Ramon & the Tri-Valley
Price Your Railing in About a Minute
The San Ramon Custom Railing price estimator turns five quick choices into an installed price range for your deck, steps or staircase. Pick the material and style, enter your lengths, and the range updates as you go. Ranges come from the same 2026 Tri-Valley cost table we publish on our railing cost guide, and a free on-site measure confirms your real number. Price it in a minute. Installed in about a week.

How the Estimate Is Calculated
Every railing is priced by the linear foot, installed. The estimator starts with the per-foot range for the material and style level you choose, then adjusts for the things that change real job costs in San Ramon, Danville, Dublin and the rest of the valley.
- Stairs: sections that run up a stair are figured at 1.25 times the level price, because raked posts, angled connections and handrail transitions take more shop and install time.
- Corners and turns: each corner adds about 10 percent, capped at 30 percent, which matches the 20 to 30 percent most turn-heavy jobs add.
- Removing an old railing: roughly $6 to $12 per foot to cut out, haul away and patch.
- Permits: when the walking surface is more than 30 inches above the ground, a guard is required and a permit is likely, so the estimate adds a typical $50 to $500 in fees.
- Small jobs: short runs have a minimum, because setup, finishing and travel cost the same whether the railing is 6 feet or 16.
The Price Ranges Behind the Numbers
| Material | Style level | Installed per linear foot |
|---|---|---|
| Wrought iron | Standard / Upgraded / Hand-forged | $65–$95 / $95–$135 / $300–$900 |
| Aluminum | Standard / Upgraded / Premium | $50–$90 / $90–$140 / $140–$200 |
| Stainless cable | Standard / Upgraded / Premium | $75–$140 / $140–$200 / $200–$260 |
| Glass | Standard / Upgraded / Frameless | $150–$260 / $260–$400 / $400–$600 |
| Interior iron balusters | Baluster swap / New handrail + balusters | $40–$70 / $60–$100 |
These are planning ranges, not quotes. Learn more about each option on our wrought iron, cable, glass, aluminum and interior stair railing pages.
What the Estimate Does Not Include
A calculator cannot see your house. A few site conditions only show up on the free on-site measure, and they can move the price:
- Rotted or undersized deck framing that has to be repaired before posts can be through-bolted
- Core drilling into concrete or stone steps
- Engineered drawings, which Walnut Creek requires for decks and balconies 30 inches or higher
- Matching an existing historic iron pattern in Danville or downtown Pleasanton
- Gates and gate automation, which we price separately on the custom gates page
If your project is a rental building facing SB 721 corrections or an HOA replacing balconies across a complex, skip the calculator and call (925) 438-6219; those jobs are priced from the inspection report.

FAQ
Questions, Answered
Straight answers on cost, code, permits and materials. Still unsure? Call and ask.
How accurate is the railing price estimator?
It uses the same installed per-foot ranges we publish for San Ramon and the Tri-Valley, adjusted for stairs, corners, removal and permits, so most projects land inside the range it shows. Site conditions such as rotted framing, concrete coring or engineering can move the price, which is why the free on-site measure sets your final written number.
Why does a stair section cost more than a level section?
Stair runs need raked posts, angled connections and a continuous graspable handrail set 34 to 38 inches above the stair nosing. That takes more layout, shop time and install time than a level guard, so the estimator figures stair sections at 1.25 times the level price.
Is the estimate a quote?
No. It is a planning range. Your real price comes after a free on-site measure, in writing, before anything is fabricated. There is no obligation to move forward, and sending us your estimate simply lets us call you back to set up the visit.
How soon can my railing be installed?
Most railings are installed about a week after you approve the design. Jobs that need a permit wait on the city or county review, and custom glass or hand-forged iron can take longer. We give you a realistic date with your written estimate.
