Our San Ramon Valley and Tri-Valley Service Area
Built in San Ramon, installed across the Tri-Valley
San Ramon Custom Railing is a locally owned shop that designs, welds, finishes and installs custom railing and gates for homes, HOAs, apartment owners and contractors along the I-680 and I-580 corridors. Every job starts with a free on-site measure and ends with a code check against the 42-inch guard height and the 4-inch sphere rule before we leave.
A 2000s foyer in Dougherty Valley, a 1970s deck in Danville and a new build in the Diablo hills each need a different plan, so each city page below covers the local details.
Licensed & Insured Custom In-Shop Fabrication Free On-Site Estimates Permit & HOA Submittal HelpCities we serve
- San Ramon: our home market, with the newest housing in the valley, plenty of oak-to-iron stair remodels and SB 721 balcony work at its larger apartment complexes.
- Danville: older homes, a Town permit counter on La Gonda Way, heritage review downtown and hillside lots with Very High fire areas on the 2025 maps.
- Dublin: the Alameda County side of our area, where most homes date from 2000 or later and the city publishes its own guards and handrails handout.
- Pleasanton: gated neighborhoods like Ruby Hill and Golden Eagle, plus a downtown whose design guidelines call out balconies and railings by name.
- Alamo: unincorporated estates permitted through Contra Costa County, and our page for neighboring Blackhawk and Diablo as well.
- Walnut Creek: Rossmoor's condo mutuals and a city handout requiring a licensed architect or engineer for decks 30 inches or higher.
Blackhawk (94506) and Diablo (94528) are covered on the Alamo page because they share the same County permit path. Not sure about your street? Call (925) 438-6219.
Two counties, six permit counters
Our area spans Contra Costa County (San Ramon, Danville, Walnut Creek, and unincorporated Alamo, Blackhawk and Diablo) and Alameda County (Dublin and Pleasanton). Five cities run their own building departments, and the unincorporated communities all file with the County Department of Conservation & Development in Martinez.
The state's 42-inch guard and 34–38 inch handrail rules apply everywhere, but handouts, portals and HOA steps do not. We confirm the local requirement before we cut steel, then help with the drawings each counter asks for. Questions about your address? Call (925) 438-6219.
FAQ
Questions, Answered
Straight answers on cost, code, permits and materials. Still unsure? Call and ask.
Do you work in Blackhawk and Diablo?
Yes. Blackhawk and Diablo are both unincorporated, so their building permits go through Contra Costa County rather than Danville or San Ramon. We cover them alongside Alamo, including HOA architectural submittals in Blackhawk and fire-zone material choices in the Diablo hills. Our Alamo page has the details, or call (925) 438-6219 to book a free estimate.
Which permit office handles my railing project?
It depends on whether your address is inside a city. San Ramon, Danville, Dublin, Pleasanton and Walnut Creek each run their own building division with an online portal. Alamo, Blackhawk and Diablo file with Contra Costa County's Department of Conservation & Development in Martinez. Tell us your address at the estimate and we will identify the right office and the drawings it expects.
How do I find out if my home is in a fire hazard severity zone?
Enter your address in the State Fire Marshal's map viewer at osfm.fire.ca.gov/fhsz. The 2025 maps added Moderate and High zones in cities for the first time. Whether those ratings change what you can build is not settled, so confirm with your building department. Metal and tempered glass railings are noncombustible either way.
